What happened Australia

So we had this great country where a fair go was the norm, where beach goers thronged to the water in summer without being scared crazy by melanoma warnings.

Where a tan was a sign of good heath and where our vitamin D levels were top notch.

Where surfing was a national pastime and people defended your right to do it.

Where having fun was important.

Where people really didn't mind what you said because you were allowed to speak your mind. I think they called it "free speech".

Where people came here to be like us, not change us into something else less valuable.

Where the kids were not full of drugs or entitled.

Where success was based on how hard you worked and how much experience you had.

Where the cops were reasonably fair and were not purely engaged in revenue raising.

Where farmers were respected for the value they brought to the community, not targeted by looney fringe groups on how they treat their animals.

Obesity was almost unheard of.

Where sports players played the game and not the man.

Where winning was important but not everything.

Where success wasn't measured in wealth or GDP.

Where politicians respected each other and had the good grace to keep their lies from us and not appear to be blatantly biased.

So what happened?
What went wrong?
Who is responsible?
Are we ourselves to blame?
What would happen if we had a war?
Would we survive?
Is anyone out there brave and talented enough to lead us out of this?
The country that gave it all away - our inventions, our smarts and our raw resources, and our freedom. - why?
Why did we allow this?
